When your Guides go quiet there’s a particular kind of loneliness that comes when you reach out to your guides, your helping spirits, your allies and hear only silence.
Your journeys feel empty. Your drums beat into a void. The presence that once felt so tangible has withdrawn, leaving you wondering: Have I done something wrong? Have they abandoned me?
Let me tell you something that might sting a little, but needs to be said with love:
Our guides rarely abandon us. More often, they step back 🧡
Why Your Guides Go Silent
Spiritual silence is often a teaching tool, a mirror, or a necessary boundary. Here are some of the most common reasons your guides may withdraw their obvious presence:
You’re asking the same question, hoping for a different answer.
You’ve received guidance (maybe through journeywork, signs, or that persistent inner knowing), but you didn’t like what you heard. So you ask again. And again. Eventually, your guides stop answering because they’ve already told you what you need to know. Repeating themselves won’t help if you’re not ready to listen.
You’ve been taking without giving.
Shamanic relationships are reciprocal relationships. If every journey is you asking for help, seeking answers, requesting healing, but you never sit with your guides to honour them, never make offerings, never give your time and attention, they will often pull back.
You’ve ignored previous messages.
Perhaps they asked you to make a change, to let something go, to take action on something you’ve been avoiding. When we ignore the guidance we receive, especially repeatedly, our guides may go quiet until we’re ready to do the work they’ve pointed us toward.
You’re being called to develop your own wisdom.
Sometimes silence is an invitation to stop seeking external validation and start trusting your own shamanic discernment. Your guides may step back so you can learn to walk between the worlds without constantly reaching for their hand.
You need to sit with the discomfort.
Shamanic growth isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes the silence is the lesson, teaching you that your connection doesn’t depend on constant confirmation.
Meeting Silence Without Panic
When you first notice the quiet, your mind might race: What did I do? How do I fix this? Are they gone forever? Here’s how to meet that silence with grace instead of panic:
Acknowledge it honestly.
Don’t pretend everything is fine or perform elaborate ceremonies to force a connection. Sit with the reality of the silence. Say out loud: “I notice you feel distant right now.”
Reflect before you react.
Before diving into elaborate appeasement work, get quiet and honest with yourself. Review your recent practice. Have you been listening, or just asking? Have you followed through on any guidance you received? Are you repeatedly seeking answers you’ve already been given?
Take a break.
If you suspect you’ve been treating your shamanic practice like a cosmic help desk, take a break from journeywork for answers and divination. No asking for guidance, no seeking signs, no “should I do this or that?”. Take time to think about how to take action on what you already have.
Show up without an agenda.
Spend time in practice that asks for nothing. Take a journey just to be present with your guides. Sit in meditation to connect. Make an offering with no request attached. Prove to them and to yourself that the relationship matters beyond what you can get from it.
Steps for Reconnection
If you’re in a period of spiritual silence and ready to rebuild the bridge, here’s a path forward:
If you’ve been ignoring guidance, acknowledge it. You might say during journey or at your altar: “I heard you ask me to [specific thing], and I haven’t listened. I’m working on understanding why that’s been hard for me.”
Go back through your journey journals, your notes, your records. What guidance have you received that you haven’t implemented? Start there. The next message often won’t come until you’ve honoured the last one.
Set a daily practice like a short journey just to visit, lighting a candle at your altar, speaking words of gratitude. Make it simple enough that you’ll actually do it. Consistency matters more than intensity.
When you do receive messages again through journeywork, signs, or synchronicities, write them down. Thank your guides for their guidance. And most importantly, take at least one concrete action based on what you’ve received.
Have you experienced spiritual silence with your guides? Times when your helping spirits or allies felt impossibly far away? How did you navigate it? What helped you reconnect or what did the silence teach you? 🧡🧡🧡
