How to Recognise & Avoid Spiritual Bypassing

Spiritual bypassing is a very persistent shadow of spirituality, manifesting in many forms, often without being acknowledged. – R. Augustus

What comes to mind when you think of ‘spirituality?

You might see forests of paradise, the faces of enlightened masters, sunsets, or any number of other stunning images.

We have a tendency to associate spirituality with transcendental and heightened states of being invariably related to the feelings of peace, joy, contentment and other ‘happy’ states of being.

While all of this can be true at specific points in our lives, many of us become intoxicated, distracted, and ensnared by these beautiful images of spirituality. It causes us to avoid the darker, painful, and more difficult parts of a spiritual path.

Spiritual bypassing is a form of avoidance. We gain short term reward and a false feeling of security and happiness while undermining our deeper self-growth path and transformation.

There are ten types of Spiritual bypassing:

  1. The Optimistic Bypass
  2. The Glorification Bypass
  3. The Victim Bypass
  4. The Altered Bypass
  5. The External Bypass
  6. The Saint Bypass
  7. The Spirit Guide Bypass
  8. The Prayer Bypass
  9. The Guru Bypass
  10. The Judgement Bypass

In this episode, we’re going to cover how to recognise and avoid each one.

You may use more than one or you may use none at all.

The important thing to remember is not to fall into a victim state and start blaming yourself.

There is no blame or judgement at The Centre for Shamanism.

That would be very easy to do and would only perpetuate your tendency to spiritual bypass. Instead, thank your Guides for bringing you this precious information and go at it with hope in your heart.

Things to remember when trying to stop spiritual bypassing:

Spiritual bypassing has trickster energy. It takes a lot of ruthless self-reflection to see the lies we believe were given in childhood and still tell ourselves.

When working with bypassing:

1. Cultivate an open-minded attitude.
2. Enter into dialogue with the light and dark side of what you do.
3. Ask others for their honest opinions.
4. Face and feel your pain.
