Seeking Freedom (but how?!)

ey are alwaAre you sseking freedom?

I’ve always craved freedom. It’s been a constant pull in my life, even though I felt anything but free for much of my childhood and well into my thirties.

I often think about

  • freedom of choice,
  • financial freedom,
  • freedom of speech,
  • freedom of religion

I worked hard and made brave choices to be where I am today and I feel free in so many ways – and the areas I don’t feel free? they are always in my sights.

A lofty ideal?

Freedom isn’t a lofty ideal or something tied to big milestones. Day-to-day, it’s a quiet guide in everyday decisions. It shows up in the small moments, like saying no to an event you don’t want to attend or choosing to rest when everything feels overwhelming.

The Buddha says “Seek freedom.

  • Not happiness.
  • Not abundance.
  • Not health.
  • but freedom

This idea has stayed with me, especially when I am at a crossroads. How do I know which path to take?

When unsure, I ask myself: Which choice will make me feel free?

The answer isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes, it’s the most challenging option.

Setting boundaries

I remember having to choose whether to stay friends with someone I’d known for years. As I grew into myself, our values drifted apart. I tried setting boundaries, hoping things might change, but eventually, I gave an ultimatum: Respect my space, or I can’t keep you in my life.

They couldn’t. So, I walked away.

It didn’t feel good. It wasn’t how I wanted things to end. But I felt free.

Freedom often comes with a cost. It can mean disappointing others or sitting with the discomfort of making a tough choice. But the alternative—staying trapped in something that no longer fits—is far heavier.

Freedom as a Guidepost

This question—Which choice will make me feel free?—can be a powerful tool, especially when other people’s opinions make decisions harder.

Your parents might expect you to follow a path that doesn’t feel right. Friends might rely on you in ways that drain you. The pull to please others is strong. It’s human. But in those moments, pausing to ask yourself what freedom feels like can help you reconnect to what’s right for you.

Take a moment to reflect:

  • What does freedom mean to you?
  • Where do you feel trapped, weighed down, or stuck?
  • What’s one choice you could make today—big or small—that would help you feel freer?

Living Freely Takes Courage

Freedom isn’t always the easiest road. Living with freedom as a guidepost requires courage and a willingness to let go of what no longer serves. The Celts understood this well. Their stories are filled with bold, brave choices—walking paths of integrity and sovereignty, even when it meant facing sacrifice or uncertainty. They remind us that freedom isn’t about avoiding challenges but meeting them head-on.

This is the foundation of what I share with my community.
