Entering The North of the Wheel of the Year
Samhain serves as the threshold into the North, opening the gateway to Winter.
When you cross this threshold, you enter a direction of the wheel where courage becomes your companion and resilience shapes your path.
In the North, we find attributes of battle and contest, strongholds and rough roads, glory and valour. These words might sound harsh at first. Yet they describe the honest terrain of winter, when life strips away what’s comfortable and asks you to attend to your inner landscape with honesty.
Winter demanded endurance from the Northern Celts. Food supplies needed careful tending through the cold months. Communities gathered close, sharing stories and warmth by the fire. People crafted with intention, transforming what they had into something meaningful. The intricate metalwork, carved bone tools, and woven textiles found in archaeological sites speak to the care they took in creating beauty even during the harshest season.
While their hands were busy crafting, their minds turned inward, contemplating the year past and the challenges ahead.
This inward turning reveals an essential truth about the North.
For some, Winter will be a time of hibernation and deep rest. You might find yourself drawn to longer sleep, to quiet evenings by the fire, to solitude and stillness. Your energy naturally turns inward, like sap withdrawing into the roots of a tree.
For others, there will be a calling to something within that demands attention. Old wounds might surface for healing. Boundaries you’ve neglected might ask to be honoured. Internal battles you’ve been avoiding might require your warrior energy to face them with courage.
Both of these states hold equal value. Both serve your growth. You may find yourself pivoting between them throughout the season, resting deeply one week and then rising to meet an inner challenge the next. Trust your own knowing of which energy you need.
The North asks you to listen to your intuition, to honour what the darkness reveals, and to move with the rhythms of your own spirit rather than against them.
